Equity Scholarships
Pattison Media is proud to support the career development of underrepresented groups in the media industry in Western Canada.
Pattison Media Ltd. is pleased to announce the awarding of six total scholarships valued at $2,500 each, to deserving students enrolled in journalism and/or broadcast studies at institutions across Western Canada.
Pattison Media recognizes that there are significant challenges in both the recruiting of well-trained individuals for all aspects of the broadcasting industry, and there are significant challenges for individuals in the underrepresented groups including:
- Indigenous Persons
- Persons with disabilities
- Members of visible minorities
- Women
Pattison Media expanded the Prairie Equity Scholarship in 2023 to accept applicants from all Western Canadian provinces and increased the annual scholarship offering to a total of up to $20,000 for 2024. After careful review of the applicants, six scholarships valued at $2,500 each will be given out.
The successful Pattison Media Equity Scholarship recipients are:

- Marina Fries SAIT, Broadcast Studies
- Karla Jubaily UBC School of Journalism
- Solana Pasqual UBC School of Journalism
- Rebecca-Lynn Reeves Grant MacEwan University School of Journalism
- Bridget Stringer-Holden UBC School of Journalism
Pattison Media looks forward to continuing the Pattison Media Equity Scholarship in January of 2025.
About the recipients:
Minaal Adnan
After graduate studies, Minaal aspires to start a career as a news anchor or reporter. With a passion for storytelling, they aim to deliver compelling, accurate news that informs and inspires audiences, engaging them through narratives that illuminate important issues and events.
Marina Fries
Marina hopes to start her career in Television Production to make meaningful films and television series as either a Producer or Editor. Through their work, Marina hopes to be a strong example of a woman following her dreams in a transformational industry. Marina looks forward to telling the world her story.
Karla Jubaily
Karla’s aim to uncover compelling stories that shed light on important issues and spark meaningful conversations. Their podcast, Cooking Up Culture, aims to do that by exploring how childhood memories of family meals forge connections, preserve traditions and shape identities. Karla desires to bring a fresh perspective to the field, reach diverse audiences, and drive positive change through impactful storytelling.
Solana Pasqual
Solana is a writer and video editor and recently completed a Master of Journalism from the University of British Columbia. Growing up, she always felt like science wasn’t for her but later realized that she loves science, just not the way it’s delivered. It’s Solana’s mission to help communicate science in ways that are accurate, interesting and fun and hopes to find a career in science journalism and documentary filmmaking.
Rebecca-Lynn Reeves
Based in Treaty 6 territory in amiskwacîwâskahikan (Edmonton), Rebecca-Lynn Reeves emphasizes local collaboration. As a cis, white journalist, she recognizes her privileges and subsequent duty to seek out and uplift underrepresented voices. Through boundless curiosity and impassioned integrity, Rebecca-Lynn approaches each project as an opportunity for learning and growth.
Bridget Stringer-Holden
Bridget is a 2024 Joan Donaldson CBC News Scholar and a recent graduate of UBC’s Master of Journalism program. She was formerly the news editor of her undergraduate student paper and hosted and produced her own francophone television show. She is trilingual and passionate about investigative journalism, environmental issues and storytelling that gives voice to underrepresented communities.
