Pattison Media Ltd. is looking for a passionate and creative general assignment reporter who can be a self-starter in a fast-paced multi-platform newsroom in Vernon, BC. We are the #1 news source for the area through our digital and radio broadcast platforms. You’ll reside in the beautiful Okanagan Valley region of British Columbia – not necessarily Vernon.   This is a part -time or full-time position, depending on the successful candidate's circumstance. This is ideal for either a junior reporter or an experienced journalist seeking a part-time opportunity. Please indicate your preference in the cover letter.

General Responsibilities:

  • Come prepared to pitch multiple story ideas every day that focus on breaking and general news, including court and crime, civic/provincial politics, lifestyle features and sports.
  • Write, edit and publish CP style content for our digital news portals and conversational stories for radio.
  • Attend regional news events including council meetings and sporting events, sometimes on weekends.
  • Develop community contacts.
  • On occasion, anchor news, weather and sports on radio.
  • Emcee community events.  Journalists without on air experience are invited to apply.
  • Work with account executives to produce ‘sponsored content’ for clients.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 6 months to 1 year experience in broadcast or print journalism (CP style) or a diploma/degree from a recognized broadcast/journalism program.
  • Strong journalistic skills, integrity, and the ability to ensure all news content meets editorial, ethical, and legal standards.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision at times, meet deadlines and produce under pressure.
  • Motivation to lead by example through enterprise reporting.
  • Ability to easily switch between covering news, sports and writing sponsored content.
  • Excellent knowledge of local news and current affairs.
  • A valid driver’s license.
  • Legally able to work in Canada.
